ANDREW STOOD motionless in the ransacked room for several minutes after Lina bolted.
Uncurling his fingers, he shook the tension from them and looked about the room, trying to distract himself from what had just happened.
"Diel!" he spat, disgusted with himself. What the hell?
He'd been patting her down for weapons, when he found that she was uncharacteristically unarmed â but he couldn't be sure what her orders were in regards to Kaisinâs safety.
And then his hands were sliding up her thighs, far too familiarly.
He hadn't the right. But at the moment, time and space meant nothing; there was just the feel of her soft skin and the scent of her had taken him back to the time before they were lost to each other.
He never, ever lost control of himself. Until now.
Leaving the room, he went straight to the dining hall.
"Sir?" the concierge caught his attention, concern on his face as he held a handkerchief out.
Andrew looked down at it, then to his reflection in one of the ornate mirrors by the lounge entrance. He looked a mess, with hair tousled and a bit of blood coloring the corner of his throbbing lip.
He swiped at the blood with the proffered linen, ignoring the pain, then ran his fingers through his hair. He straightened his jacket, then took up his position just inside the door, out of sight of the stage.
He inspected every face in the room. Nearly everyone was turned toward Adeline. The few exceptions were several couples engaged in discreet conversation, and several others at the back of the room bantering over business.
Stevens stood at his usual post, as expected.
Andrewâs gaze was drifting away when Stevens shifted and checked his pocket watch, then looked around the room.
He looked at his watch again, his body and expression tense.
Andrew frowned at the unprofessional behavior. What was he waiting for?
Every night Lina sang the same number of songs. Except the first night, when she performed their special song. And tonight. Her set was up, and as the dining room occupants were preparing to leave, she launched into it again, unaccompanied as she had been that first night.
Andrew's head turned in her direction the instant she began those notes. It was instinct. A call. But she wasn't looking to him. He was out of her line of site this time. This time, she was looking at Kaisin as she sang, though the feel of the song was different. Not like that first night, but more of a standard performance, charming and clear like the rest of her repertoire. But she maintained her focus on his client, despite Stevens stepping forward to prompt Kaisin to depart from the dining hall.
It looked as though Lina was trying to keep Kaisin there, singling him out. Andrew's gaze swept the room. Everyone had politely remained in their seats as she performed, but Stevens looked agitated as he reluctantly returned to his post, again checking his pocket watch.
The only other entrance to the dining hall was the staff door, where only two men hovered.
